Your Voice, Your Story:

Mandy Gonzalez

Sunday Nov. 15, 2020, 1-3:30pm on ZOOM
PDF | Register Here

Many know Mandy as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton on Broadway. But before she landed the job of a lifetime, Mandy booked critically acclaimed Broadway roles: Nina Rosario in Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, and Elphaba in Wicked.

In this masterclass, Mandy will share pearls of self-discovery and a range of best practices she’s developed as a working professional, empowering PTW students to create characters of their own, refine them and tell their stories through song — during Broadway callbacks and all-school musicals alike.

Course at a glance

Truthful sound + truthful intention = unforgettable performance. Intention informs performance. Moment to moment, phrase to phrase, a character’s intention influences choices within her song delivery, use of vocal technique — even the inflection of her voice. Mandy will demystify strategies for leading with intention to tell a character’s story in a truthful way — in your one-of-a-kind voice — drawing on vocal technique as well as deeply personal dramatic interpretation.

Performers will each deliver a song they’ve prepared in their private voice lessons or song interpretation semester class at PTW. Observing each performer, Mandy will offer specific, constructive feedback on ways to bond the uniqueness of their voice with strong character intention to deliver a truthful, captivating performance. While mastering Mandy’s techniques requires dedication over time, she will isolate areas of focus for each student, providing you an express lift to your next level as a performing storyteller.

Meet Mandy

Possessing one of the most powerful and versatile voices of contemporary performance, Mandy Gonzalez currently stars as Angelica Schuyler in Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton. She originated the role of Nina Rosario in his Tony Award-winning Broadway musical In The Heights, receiving a Drama Desk Award for her performance. She has starred as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked, for which she received an award for Best Replacement from Broadway.com. Other Broadway roles include Princess Amneris in Aida and John Lennon in Lennon, as well as her debut role in Dance of the Vampires.

Mandy’s TV appearances include the recurring role of Lucy Knox on CBS drama “Madam Secretary,” as well as Agent Susan Combs on hit series “Quantico,” among other guest appearances. Her film credits include Across the Universe, After, starring opposite Pablo Schreiber, and “Man on a Ledge.” Mandy’s voice made its Disney debut as Mei in Mulan 2.

A frequent concert soloist, she has performed with symphony orchestras including New York Pops, Philly Pops, Cleveland Orchestra, and Naples Philharmonic In 2017, Mandy released her debut album Fearless (Warner Music Group) to international acclaim and peer recognition. She’s also the founder of the #FearlessSquad, an online platform that focuses on positivity and inclusiveness.

Song Interpretation with Brian Loeffler
Part 1: Mandy Gonzalez
PDF | Register Here

This semester, PTW presents a revolutionary pairing: Song Interpretation featuring Broadway veteran and devoted educator Brian Loeffler alongside an exclusive PTW masterclass featuring Hamilton star Mandy Gonzalez.*

Students who enroll in Mandy’s masterclass Your Voice, Your Story: Bonding vocal technique and dramatic interpretation to create truthful performance, will have the opportunity to prepare select songs from Mandy’s Broadway performances during Brian’s song interpretation semester class.

This first-of-its-kind course pairing offers students a three-dimensional understanding of different ways their voices and lived experiences might emerge across a range of repertoire from Broadway smash-hits that have featured Mandy’s critically-acclaimed vocal performances, including Wicked, Aida, Hamilton and In the Heights.

*Students will explore Mandy’s Broadway performance repertoire during the first half of the semester, and a new master TBD during the second half.

Course at a glance

Students attending Brian’s song interpretation semester class will first observe and absorbed Mandy’s performances, as well as pivotal performances from select masters of stage and screen, then choose specific songs they’d like to prepare for their own performance during Mandy’s masterclass session.

With one-on-one instruction from Brian, they’ll dig into a close reading of the lyric, explore their own phrasing tendencies related to vocal technique and artistic expression; receive personalized feedback on their dramatic choices emerging from skill and intuition; and hone a performance- ready song with a sharp focus on truthful storytelling. As they work together with Brian and their fellow students to achieve their next-level performance of a selection from Mandy’s extensive Broadway performance repertoire, they’ll adopt new skills for showcase and critical response from Mandy herself during her masterclass slated for Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020.

We will explore the distinctions among inspiration, emulation and imitation, and how each acts as a tool for emerging professionals to find their own voice. Each student will establish and refine their own interpretation of their semester songs, one that’s unique to their personality, style and artistic vision.

You’re smart. You’re talented. You’re driven. So why haven’t you booked VO? Many gifted performers remain clueless over what casting directors expect from voice actors — even unknown terms can throw you off in the middle of an audition. Like — What’s copy? What’s a conversation read? What direction did I just receive???

Deep breath. In this course, you’ll learn to speak voiceover. Together, we’ll refine your talent and you’ll adopt new skills for synthesizing commercial and promo copy; approaching audition copy with a strong, relevant concept across specific media formats; and reading conversationally when the copy’s not written conversationally — among many other strategies you never knew existed. We’ll also tackle agency representation, management, union/non-union gigs, online presence and secrets of the demo reel.
