Dance is more than just an art form when it comes to your kids– it’s a celebration of movement, a boost for their body and mind, and a powerful tool for their self-expression.
But what is the best age to start dance lessons? And when is your child going to be ready? Let’s get right into it!
The Importance of Dance in Child Development
Here at Performers Theatre Workshop, we’ve seen how dance changes our students– even if they don’t want to be professional dancers in their future.
Physically, dancing is a great way to get them to stay active, promoting both fitness and coordination. Creatively, dancing lets kids express themselves in a more physical way.
Through dance, though, kids are also learning essential social skills. The value of teamwork and dancing synchronously, patience as they work on a skill, and communication skills as they ask questions and work on perfecting their craft.
The joy and freedom that come from dancing are unmatched, making it an incredibly fun and expressive way for children to grow and develop. At Performers Theatre Workshop, we've welcomed students who, initially lacking any dance experience, wanted to overcome shyness in social situations. Initially, they approached dance with a mix of curiosity and hesitation, reluctant to fully immerse themselves. However, through the supportive encouragement of our instructors and students, these young stars gradually began to engage in group dances, mastering the fundamental steps one at a time. Dance transformed into a joyful and expressive outlet, not only boosting confidence but also fostering new friendships. This transformation underscores the powerful impact dance can have in child development, a change we're privileged to witness regularly.
What is the Best Age to Start Dance Lessons?
But again, one of the most common questions we hear at PTW is, "What is the best age to start dance lessons?"
The truth is, the answer is not one-size-fits-all! It varies depending on each child's physical, emotional, and cognitive development. So let’s break down some of the different dance classes we have at PTW.
Dance Lessons for Young Kids (Jr. Jr. Program 5-7 Years Old)
Your child is probably naturally energetic and expressive, which already makes them a great candidate for starting dance classes! Here at PTW, we teach children as young as toddlers (5-7 years old) in more simple group-focused classes that are particularly focused on creative expression and imagination, making our approach to dance education both effective and engaging for young learners.
And while your child might not seem like they’re ready, parents will sometimes place their children in multiple different programs to see what fits. In fact, more often than not, there are more than a few kids who come into PTW’s classes shy for the first few lessons, but blossom after they realize they have a comfortable place to move and have fun!
Nonetheless, consider your child’s developmental pace. If they’re already comfortable with taking direction quickly, then they could very well enjoy a dance class. It could also be a great opportunity to teach them the importance of engaged listening.
It’s important to note that very young children may have shorter attention spans and varying levels of physical coordination.
At PTW, we’ve tailored our early starter programs to be more about exploration and fun, focusing less on technique and more on movement, music, and fun!
Dance Lessons for Older Children
PTW has many great dance classes for kids up to 18 years old!
Also, while many parents might fear that their kids are starting too late, older children often bring a level of maturity and focus to their lessons that can lead to fast progress. So don’t let your child’s “late start” hinder you from getting them into a dance class. We’ve seen many tweens and teens blossom in dance simply by starting.
In fact, at PTW, we believe it’s never too late to start dancing! Our programs for older beginners are designed to build foundational skills in a supportive and encouraging environment, helping every student reach their potential (no matter how old they are!).
