As part of our 2020-responsive approach to elite performing arts education, PTW is thrilled to unveil the newest addition to our professional faculty roster: Upright Citizens Brigade, Broadway performer and star of acclaimed web series “Outcast,” Daisy Hobbs.
How to HilariousA seriously funny, slightly ridiculous approach to writing and character development
A rising force in digital content, Daisy created and currently stars in “Outcast,” a fresh and fun musical web series, and her signature music video parodies have gone viral, garnering critical acclaim across multiple online platforms. Beyond talent and hard work, the secret to Daisy’s success is mining personal experiences and daily interactions for truthful character creation and development. This semester, she’ll share pearls of comedic wisdom with PTW students, transporting them from their living rooms into the hearts and minds of their zaniest characters. Along the way, she’ll offer individualized instruction and feedback, helping each student create truthful, specific, 3-dimensional characters, monologues and original sketches.
Course at a glance
How To Hilarious approaches comedic breakthroughs from the performer’s perspective as well as the writer’s. The first half of Daisy’s 10-week course invites students to explore character development and monologue writing, while the second half focuses on sketch-writing — an invaluable skill for the streaming era. Investigating as a class and one-on-one with Daisy, students will identify and uncover latent characters, create new ones and refine their approach to inhabiting each character in a fun yet truthful way. They’ll adopt skills for writing multiple characters into a single scene, invoking laughter naturally — through their writing as well as their performance.
